Aladdin's Desiccant Dehumidification
Refrigerant dehumidification works by passing air over refrigerated coils to condense water vapor. Desiccant dehumidifiers work when moist incoming air flows over a wheel filled with a silica gel desiccant. A desiccant is a material that attracts and holds moisture. This material acts like a sponge drawing moisture from the air (sorption). When the wheel rotates through heated exhaust air, the moisture evaporates (desorption) and is carried outside. Then the cycle repeats. This process absorbs moisture without ice build-up and is not limited by low temperatures. A desiccant usually produces air with a relative humidity in the range of 4% - 8%.
Often at cooler temperatures, refrigerant dehumidification capacity falls off before ideal moisture levels are reached. Desiccant dehumidification performs well even at low temperatures. The result is dramatically more effective moisture removal. Controlling the humidity level in the environment is the first and most critical step in the restoration process and is best accomplished by dehumidification.
Our high capacity desiccant dehumidifier provides a blanket of very dry air in the building to remove moisture from the contents and structure allowing both to dry simultaneously in place. Careful monitoring ensures wood floors and the structure are safely dried to prevent secondary damage. Our desiccant dehumidifier is capable of removing over a ton and a half of water on the first day of a typical flood job.
In March 2004 the Kewadin Casino in Sault Ste. Marie experienced a fire that caused extensive damage. Even more damage was created by the building's emergency sprinkler system that was activated; roughly 100,000 square feet of the building experienced water damage. There was also structural and roof damage allowing wind and snow to enter the building. Aladdin's Restorative Drying was called initially for the rental of our desiccant dehumidifier and air movers. Aladdin's quickly moved in and set up the 5600 CFM Desiccant Dehumidifier and put it to work. Aladdin's Tim Jankowski, an IICRC Master Restorer, was later asked to take over management of the water damage restoration to insure the job was completed accurately and efficiently.
